My family and I really enjoyed the Annual Old Mass Walk from Drumsru to Allen today. Local historian, Michael Jacob, guided us and provided us with some snippets of information regarding the local landmarks, flora and fauna along the way.
We also saw the old Iron Bridges that cross the River Slate and its tributary stream from Cloncumber. The confluence of these waterways gives the townland of Cloncumber its name, Michael Jacob informed us. We then passed Cloncumber Rath before walking along part of the future Blueway on the Grand Canal to Ballyteague Castle.
Thanks to LBDC Community Alert for organising the walk and thanks to all those involved in helping out with stops along the way and refreshments in Allen Hall afterwards. I wonder if this route could possibly be opened up to the public with the cooperation of local landowners, and the Iron Bridges restored, as a link from Drumsru, Barnaran and Lullymore to the Blueway.
