Just 1.5 kilometres from my doorstep is Lodge Bog in Lullymore East. It is still being used by Bord na Móna to supply Edenderry Power Plant, but some of the raised bog has been preserved by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and is being used to breed Curlew and Lapwing in conjunction with volunteers from Birdwatch Kildare.
Another section of 38 hectares is now out of production and currently being re-wetted by Bord na Móna, in a similar manner to Lough Boora in Co. Offaly. This is in addition to a large area of cutaway bog in Lullybeg, where re-wetting is well under way.
The bogs have provided livelihood for our communities for generations. By rehabilitating them, they will provide a valuable amenity for our communities to enjoy for generations to come.
