The Bord na Mona Recycling Drehid Community Grant Scheme supports lots of good projects in the local area. One of my favourite projects is a Lapwing Conservation project near Blackwood.
Following a visit to a National Parks and Wildlife Service managed conservation area, BirdWatch Ireland Kildare Branch decided that the only way to protect the Lapwing chicks from ground based predators was to install a specially designed electric fence.
The initial reports from the site this year are that the new fence has done its job and several chicks were bred in North Kildare. Thanks to the local family that allow their land to be used for this project and for their volunteer time monitoring the birds also.
