I was on the new Barrow Blueway in Ballyteague this afternoon. It was great to see the new walkway being used by plenty of local families.
I also saw some horses on the path. Unfortunately horses are not permitted on the canal towpaths, and have already caused some damage to the brand new compacted dust surface.
I will be working with Waterways Ireland to take action to ensure that no further damage is caused. In addition, I will look at the potential for designated Bridleways, on the opposite sides of the canal, as I proposed following discussions with horse owners in my submission to Kildare County Council on the Grand Canal Greenway.
