Grand Canal Lifting Bridge Restored

As a member of Allenwood Tidy Towns, I am always on the lookout for interesting projects that we can accomplish as a group. When Killina man, John Sullivan, pointed out to me that the lifting bridge on the Grand Canal was rusting away, I saw that as a perfect restoration project.

We contacted Waterways Ireland, who were very helpful and provided us with some background history on the bridge. We intend to use that on a future information board, close to the bridge, which will make a nice point of interest for visitors to the proposed Grand Canal Greenway.

The fine work was done by Allenwood men, Nozzy Johnson of Johnson Scaffolding and local painter, Johnny Moran. The project was paid for in full by Allenwood Tidy Towns, which is supported by the local community and Kildare County Council, amongst others.
