Grand Canal Greenway

Kildare County Council have announced an exciting new project to build a 40 kilometre Greenway along the Grand Canal in Kildare. Details of the plan are available on the council website (click here). A planning application has already been submitted and detailed drawings are available.

I have built an interactive map of the Greenway based on council plans at https://b-wy.se/greenway-map. By clicking on a section of the map, you can get a link to a more detailed plan for that section. The Greenway will cross over the canal via foot-bridges at various points. Near the Shee (Skew) Bridge in Allenwood, a boardwalk will be built on the northern bank of the canal.

Greenway Route through Kildare

My family and I have been to the very popular and successful Greenway in Mayo on more than one occasion. It runs all the way from Westport to Achill Island with plenty of links to the local villages that it passes through. It accommodates walkers, runners and cyclists and has given a great boost to tourism in the area. A Greenway on the Grand Canal will certainly provide a similar boost to tourism in Kildare. In particular, the villages of Ticknevin, Allenwood and Robertstown should benefit as convenient stopping points along the route.

The council are seeking submissions from the public right now and I am preparing a detailed submission document over the Christmas period. It is important that constructive feedback from the local communities is provided at the planning stage. I will be looking for input from residents of the villages and town-lands involved in the near future. If you are interested in the Greenway and don’t have time to make your own submission, get in touch with me using the details on my contact page.
