Proposed 30kph speed limit at Schools

At the October full council meeting today, I proposed that the council make a bye-law to set the speed limit at all primary and secondary schools in the county to 30 kilometres per hour, at all times of the day.

At Killina National School, the nearest school to the entrance of the Drehid Waste Management Facility, the speed limit is temporarily reduced to just 50 kph at certain times of the day. This is despite the school being located on a bad bend with the heavy haulage traffic constantly passing by in both directions.

At Clocha Rince NS, the speed limit is temporarily reduced to 30 kph only at certain times, despite being used at all hours of the day for library and creche access.

Most rural schools in the county are used outside school hours for dance classes, sports training, night classes, community meetings and much more. Schools are the locations where the largest groups of vulnerable pedestrians gather at any one time in rural communities and we should be proactive in protecting them.

At the meeting it was agreed that the proposal would be considered as part of the ongoing county wide speed limit review.
